Okay, so I am rarely impressed with red carpet fashion. It's not that the stars don't look beautiful --they do. It's just that they also look boring. Beautiful, but boring. Most stars wear a version of the same dress--strapless or one-shouldered on top, fitted to the knee and then flared out at the bottom. Colors and embellishments may vary, but basically the dresses are all the same. And, I mean, sure, that's fine, they look great. Just not very inspiring.

But omgomgomg I LOVED the Chanel Couture dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the Academy Awards last night. The color was different, the shape was different...mind-blowing. I can't stop thinking about it.

Nicole Richie also really impressed me. I loved her Reem Acra vintage gown--stunning. And different.

These two were playing on a whole other level of chic last night.

2010 - New Year's Resolutions of the Style Variety

Here are my three New Year's resolutions (Style Category). Of course I have others--exercise regularly, drink less coffee, blah blah blah--but these are the ones I'm really going to try to keep.

#1 - Layer more creatively. Most days you will find me wearing a basic tank under a dark cardigan with jeans or leggings. In 2010, I vow to get more creative with layering. Two combinations I'm going to try: a hoodie under a blazer (with a ponytail to show off the hood!) and a lacy camisole under a skinny cardigan under a cropped leather bomber. Hey, baby steps.

#2 - Try a dress every now and then. When I'm feeling "grabby" (you know what I mean--when you don't need anything new but you MUST HAVE something new), I usually just reach for a new pair of jeans. In 2010, I resolve to reach for a dress when I am in a fashion rut. I'm going to start with this outfit: a floral dress, black tights, a bright scarf and a black blazer. Not exactly revolutionary, but definitely a departure from my usual look.

#3 - Finally organize my closet in a meaningful way. It's not that I don't have a neat closet. I do. It's just not organized in a way that makes putting things together easy. This year I will get it right, even if it takes me an entire afternoon. I will get rid of all the stuff that doesn't work (there are quite a few mistakes lurking in there). I will make a list of basics I need to add (at the top: a white shirt that actually fits). I will purchase items on the list. Finally, I will make a list of possible outfits, taking care to follow resolutions #1 and #2. Obsessive? Sure. Nerdy? Definitely. Necessary? If I want to minimize the time I spend standing in front of my closet, scratching my head...yes.

#1 and #2 are about getting out of my fashion rut, and #3 is about being organized enough to make that possible. What are your 2010 style resolutions?

Must-Have: The Sequined Skirt

Alli wrote this a few days ago, and I have been laughing about it ever since. Don't get me wrong--I am 100% in favor of rainboots. I get super excited about any chance to wear them; I throw mine on if there's even a chance of rain. My rainboots do NOT, however, feature fruit, cartoon characters or anything else you might see on a school bus.

Full disclosure: They're from Target.

Please, girls, get a pair of grown-up rainboots!

I am in l00000ove with this new top that just arrived at Runway. The easy, roomy fit is the perfect complement to skinny black pants or skinny jeans; the feather is super cute and on-trend.

I'll be wearing this top (with a black tank underneath) with my French Connection skinny black ponte pants and ankle boots to Market on Friday. Super cute and really comfortable--exactly what I need for a long day of buying stuff for Runway. This adorable jersey top is steal at $39.50. Sizes are limited, so hurry!

Okay, so I am not a devoted watcher of Gossip Girl. I have seen parts of a few episodes, and while I'm not familiar with the storylines, I do know the characters and their signature styles.

Well, I stumbled up on Gossip Girl last night when I was flipping channels. Aware of the show's reputation for fashion-forward looks, I tuned in. More than anything, I was looking for inspiration.

Um. EW. Is it just me? Granted, I only saw the Sotheby's auction scene...but still. I was really disappointed. Serena--whose amazing body was on display at last week's Emmy Awards--looked tired and a little skanky with her bed-head hair and skin-tight Leger bandage dress. Blair's high-necked iridescent dress and bizarro braids made her look dumpy.

I suppose that the dress choices are debatable; some of you may have loved these looks. But I thought both girls' hairstyles (ahem, lack thereof) were terrible.

Am I the only one who was less than impressed?

Eh. The Emmys.

Okay, so I don't really get into red carpet fashion. I know, I know, it seems like I would...but to be honest, there's hardly ever anything special on the red carpet. Usually everyone looks just fine (though you wouldn't know it based on the snarky E! Fashion Police segment), but no one looks particularly spectacular. Long, drapey dress, messy up-do...no one really does anything different.

The red carpet fashion at the Emmys started out the same way. But. But! Then I saw January Jones.

It wasn't so much that her dress was ground-breaking. But is was pretty perfect. The art deco details were beautiful (though not everyone loved their corset-y shape) and definitely stood out in a sea of cheesy floral add-ons. The pastel shade looked amazing with the Mad Men star's coloring, and her hair wasn't overdone. She radiated confidence; it was obvious that she was wearing the dress, not the other way around.

There were lots of beautiful gowns on the Emmys red carpet, but January's was my favorite.

Now, of course, some ladies got it all wrong. Sarah Silverman. Padma Lakshmi. Kyra Sedgwick. But a few hot messes are to be expected, and as far as hot messes go, these three weren't even in the top 25 of all time. Where was Bjork and her swan costume?

So, sigh. The Emmys red carpet fashion just didn't do it for me. With the exception of January's deco dress, I didn't see anything all that different from last year. I'm ready for a red carpet with some spectacular hits and misses...and since the Emmys are the last big awards show of the year, I guess I'll have to wait for 2010.

Stella McCartney's designs for Adidas were on display last night as danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki took the court to play in the women's quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.

Stella McCartney has partnered with Adidas since 2005, creating decidely non-preppy designs for the court. I love how Wozniacki's outfit was sophisticated (the drapey top) yet romantic (that muted rose color, the tiered skirt). The effect was almost Gatsby-esque, and certainly a welcome change from the neon brights and skin-tight fits usually seen on the court.

The Open marked Wozniacki's debut as the new face of McCartney's designs. Check out the collection here.

I was so excited to open my August issue of Glamour and see this great blurb about J Brand jeans. The issue focuses on denim, and Glamour style expert Suze Yalof Schwartz had this to say about J Brand:

Inspired by my new intern Alli, I've been checking out the preppy, ladylike style of Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf. Full-on prep isn't really my thing, though, so I've been messing around with this look and trying to make it my own. How about this outfit for lunch with the girls? Printed strapless dress (just arrived at Runway), proper handbag by Amici and a sweet grosgrain headband.

I love how the wild print of the dress offsets the primness of the bag and headband. Since I'm more Serena than Blair, I'd add edgy peep-toe booties and a shrunken blazer to complete this classic-with-a-twist look.

I love love LOVE this outfit.

The girly ruffles on the trench provide an interesting contrast to the preppiness of the striped tee and tulip skirt. It doesn't look choppy, though, because the colors--khaki, shades of blue, and white--share the same nautical vibe. Olivia pulls it all together with an amazing oversized bib necklace.

PS - To all you Runway girls who don't think you can wear a navy dress or skirt with black heels...yes, you can. Check it.

It's totally counterintuitive given the ridiculous temperatures in Statesboro, but I am *really* feeling black denim right now.

I'm seeing it everywhere, and I love the slightly punk sensibility it imparts. Friday night, I'm going to pair my J Brand black skinnies (sorry, they have to be skinny) with a BCBGeneration gray sequined tank and the black Pour La Victoire bondage heels I got in New York this spring. Friday cannot get here fast enough. It's Monday and my mind is definitely not on work, so instead of paying bills I'm making my "to-pack" list for the Fourth of July holiday. Here's what I'm taking with me to Tybee this weekend.

1. Aviators. I heart aviators for their summery, sporty vibe. Check out the "Ocean City" by A.J. Morgan--a true summer steal at $16.

2. Flip-flops. I love the new Havaianas slim "Peacock" flip flops. The pattern is adorable, and the gold straps go with everything.

We were so excited when we opened our November Lucky and saw this Kensie Girl cropped houndstooth jacket as part of the outfit for "Day #1: Bold Yet Classic." Of course, the editors go on to show us how to build several other--totally different--outfits around this trendy, affordable piece.

I love the skinny jeans look (especially this time of year), but sometimes I just can't handle a pair of jeans that are tight all the way down AND low-rise.

I've been looking for mid-rise skinny jeans, and lucky for me, two of my favorite denim designers are now making mid-rise skinnies. Lucky Brand just introduced the "Mia," a mid-rise skinny in a great dark wash. Mia is perfect with heels or tucked into boots. J Brand, the originator of the skinny jean craze, now offers its signature cigarette jean in a mid-rise. The "844" has the same great skinny leg as the original, but its higher rise is a LOT more comfortable.
